Welcome to week 3 of Week of the Geek! It’s been a pretty quiet week overall (you know, if we ignore politics) so this week is a short issue, but there’s definitely some interesting things to learn about.
Television
Fear the Walking Dead, the Walking Dead spinoff that launched in 2015, will be losing a big piece of the behind-the-scenes leadership as it heads into Season 3. Showrunner Dave Erickson is moving on to develop a new series at AMC, though he will remain as the show’s Executive Producer. In other Fear the Walking Dead news, it was recently announced that Daniel Sharman of Teen Wolf fame will be joining the cast.
In a show ending that has been a long (long, long) time coming, Naruto wed Hinata in Naruto Shippuden’s 500th and final episode. The original Naruto anime premiered in 2002, giving us 15 years of entertainment. Fans mourning the loss of the will be able to cope a little easier, though, with a spin-off named Boruto that starts next month, following the next generation of ninjas in Konoha.
Fans of classic television show Mystery Science Theater 3000 (MST3K) got a glimpse this week of the reboot’s first trailer. The reboot, starring Felicia Day and Patton Oswalt, was funded by one of the most successful Kickstarters in history, in which fans raised almost $6 million to see the show made. So far, fans seem pleased with what they’ve seen from the trailer, which promises a show as campy and ridiculous as the original. The show premieres April 14th on Netflix.
Movies
The new Power Rangers movie debuted in theaters yesterday amongst shaky reviews from critics. While the movie certainly appeals to those of us who spent countless hours watching the hokey original, complete with laughably poor special effects, critics were disappointed by the wavering between loyalty to that background and halfhearted updating to explore more adult themes and character development. The numbers aren’t in quite yet, but I expect it will lead at the box office this weekend, unless the Disney contingent is enough to keep Beauty and the Beast at the top.
Marvel made waves this week by releasing the first two Spiderman:Homecoming posters in quick succession. One of the posters shows Peter in action, while the other plays up his youth as he lounges in costume with a ‘Midtown School of Science and Technology’ jacket over the top. The movie, starring Tom Holland and Robert Downey Jr. is set to come out July 7th of this year.
DC wasn’t to be outdone, though — the release of the first full Justice League trailer came out just in time to make it into this week’s newsletter! The trailer combines a lot of action with some classic rock. The initial response from fans seems to be hopeful, but many are wary after some recent lackluster movies from DC. Justice League comes out in November of this year.
